As it turns out, I am showing not only on Saturday at Redeemer, but IMAGO is making some inroads to Hamilton and having a show  at the Friendship Gallery for the James St. North Art Crawl.  I am displaying my Apathy///Epiphany series, but there will be a whole lot of great stuff from a bunch of classmates of mine, my friend Kira Lodder, plus a number of other talented artists that I’m not even sure of.  Moreover you’ll be seranaded by  Bruekke. April 9 comes much too fast.

With Ash Wednesday yesterday, Listener still playing in my ears and the present reality of a loved ones fragility, I have been thinking about how a community collectively wrestles with the reality of our mortalily, coming to the cross, the dirtiness of our lives and the goodness forged through God’s refining fire.

“Tarnished Gold and Bread with Mould” is the result. (I apologize for the poor photo quality)

“…for dust you are,and to dust you will return” Gen 3.19

These two images are of small Momento Mori that I recently saw during my stay in New York. Both dating around 1500, they add a rich and deep dimension in my understanding to Ash Wednesday. Translated roughly from Latin as “Remember you must die”, Momento Mori were often wore around ones neck–a reminder of ones mortality all but a touch away.
